    National Allotment Week

    National Allotment Week

2025 marks the 22nd year of celebrating allotments with the theme for this year being Allotments and Well Being. Started in 2002, National Allotments Week is an annual initiative aiming to raise awareness of allotments and their role in helping people live healthier lifestyles, grow their own food, develop friendships, and bolster communities. This year the week runs from 11-17 August, and is about celebrating these green spaces and the benefits they have for our health and well being. Did you know that the first allotments for rent started in the Victorian era with a huge increase in allotment usage during the First and Second World Wars due to the shortage of imported food. Disused railway land, public parks and private gardens were all utilised to grow fruit and vegetables. In more recent times, allotments have increased vastly in popularity with a far greater awareness of sustainability and health benefits. Families and a younger demographic have turned to own-growing and have rented allotments or transformed their gardens to grow produce. Visit: https://thenas.org.uk/national-allotments-week for further information and local activities being run on your area.
